Transgender People are Completely Banned From Boarding Airplanes in Canada

This is really unlike Canada. Somebody fucked up.

I looked up that legislation on the government’s website and it’s part of a section on checking ID that also bans people from boarding an airplane if their age, appearance, etc. don’t seem to match what is listed on the passport they provide. The point of the legislation, so far as I can see, is to stop people from boarding a plane with an ID that does not belong to them. It has the unintended (at least, I hope it’s unintended) consequence of being discriminatory towards transgender people, who also won’t quite match up with the ID they provide.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t get on a plane in Canada if you’re transgender. A kind, unbiased security guard will look at your passport, see that it’s obviously yours, and let you go. The only problem here is if a bigoted guard uses this law as an excuse to stop you from boarding a plane.

The regulation should still be changed, of course, so that it can’t be used to discriminate against transgender people, but it doesn’t seem to me to be written for the purpose of discrimination, and it doesn’t mean that transgender people are going to be banned from going on planes no matter what.

Agreeing with the above post, it isn’t SPECIFICALLY designed to prevent transgendered people from boarding a plane, but in the eyes and hands of people who discriminate against the T, it becomes one.
